Tuesday's Tip of the Day- Beautify your Basement

August 21, 2012 - Updated: February 27, 2013

Beautify your Basement!

Often a basement can be one of the trickiest places in a house to decorate. Basements have a tendency to be dark and damp and a dumping ground for old furniture and other un wanted items. But with the right decorating and use of space a basement can become an added bonus in your home.

Focus on lighter colors. Lighter colors will make the space appear bigger and brighter. Light toned colours with a light ceiling will make the space appear more open. To add colour to the basement focus on accessorizing.

Due to dampness and cool temperatures in a basement it is recommended to use Berber carpet or laminate flooring. Basement floors tend to be cold so a nice Berber carpet can add warmth especially during those cold months. Laminate flooring is a great alternative to hardwood it is easy to clean and it is a click flooring system so there is no need for a sub floor and it looks classy.

Because basements tend to be dark focus on using pot lighting or continuous light poles in the ceiling. This will make the space brighter. Wall Sconces are a great way to brighten the room and add character to the area. If lighting is still a problem a simple solution is to find floor lamps. Floor lamps can also become a beautiful focal point in the room adding a bit of ‘jazz’ but also brightening your space.

Accessorizing any room can be a lot of fun but also difficult. If you are using light colours in your basement focus on brighter accessories. Accessories can be used in the form of simple detailing:

Lamps- coloured lamps or accent lamps in a silver or gold

Pictures- Personal pictures to create a more intimate feel or pictures mounted on the wall

Blankets and Throw Pillows- by adding coloured blankets and throw pillows in a room you create an instant burst of colour

Area Rug- if you are using laminate flooring using an area rug can break up the space

The most important thing when accessorizing any room is to focus on consistency. Pick a theme or a colour palette and stick to that.
