Tips to Stay Cool in Your Home!

July 23, 2013 - Updated: July 23, 2013

Tips to keeping your home Cool during the Hot Summer Months

As Canadians we all know the extreme weather conditions we face throughout the different seasons changing. We often find ourselves wishing it were summer when it were winter and vice versa! Throughout the past couple weeks we have definitely experience quite a heat wave.

Here are a few quick tips on how to keep your home cool!

  • Set your thermostat at the highest temperature possible that you can tolerate- if humidity is to much for you then ensure you have the proper humidity devices to cool your space. The closer the temperature from inside and outside your home – the lower your air conditioning bill will be.
  • When turning your AC on avoid setting it at a drastically lower temperature than normal. It will not cool your home any faster than normal and will consequentially result in unnecessary expenses.
  • Consider using an interior fan or window air conditioning unit. It will help to spread the cool air faster and won’t greatly increase your power use.
  • Avoid placing appliances that give off heat such as a Lamp or TV near your thermostat.
  • Keep your lights turned off! Light bulbs generate heat and in this type of humidity can cause your rooms to heat up faster than normal especially in older homes where air conditioners are not centrally located.
  • Make sure you are using a proper sized fan or window unit AC. Buying a bigger unit or fan will not work as effectively as a properly sized unit. The reason being that if the units are blowing to much air into a room it will not allow for proper dehumidification to take place.
  • If you have an AC system in your home set your fan to shut off the same time as the compressor. Use circulating fans to provide air flow from room to room.
  • Make sure all of your maintenance is up to date on your AC unit and have a professional let you know if there is anything your system needs to work more efficiently.
  • Make sure to keep windows closed on a humid day to ensure the cold air stays inside and the warm air doesn’t come inside! On the flip side if it is a cooler day with lots of breeze open your windows for natural air flow through your home!

Hope everyone is enjoying this heat wave and be sure to stay hydrated!
