Every month our office has a meeting to recap on sales, events, and different real estate trends. We go over everything that you would expect to see in your standard office meeting.
However this meeting was a little different. It took place at the Brampton Woman’s Shelter. The meeting took place in a gymnasium with basketball courts which had recently been donated by Royal LePage Credit Valley.
For those of you who don’t know The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation is Canada’s largest foundation dedicated exclusively to funding women’s shelters and violence prevention programs. Violence is something that can touch every life and quite often there is not a support network built up for victims of violence to come forward and escape the vicious cycle and create a safe environment for their families.
Our brokerage Royal LePage Credit Valley in 2005 alone raised close to $40,000.00 towards the Brampton Woman’s Shelter. The Brampton Woman’s Shelter is a place where woman and children can go to feel safe and accepted in a violence free environment. At our meeting a representative from the shelter went over various activities and programs they have set in place to assist mothers and children on how to get back on their feet. She informed those of us at the meeting the effects that violence can have on families and how prevalent it is in our society but unfortunately how often it remains unheard of.
Not only has our brokerage supported The Brampton Women’s Shelter financially but also many members of our brokerage have made it their mission to assist in volunteering in any way that they possibly can. The volunteers and people involved in this cause put forth their time and their effort to help make a change in the lives of woman and children and to show them a more positive way of life.
With emotional and mental support these people affected by violence have the opportunity to change their lives. Sometimes all it takes is someone to believe that they can change and to be provided with a safe environment.
Statistics tell us that:
- 51% of women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16.
- 360,000 children are exposed to domestic violence each year.
- One to two women are murdered by a current or former partner each week in Canada.
- In the time it takes to brew a cup of tea, 3 women will be assaulted by an intimate partner.
Those statistics may just be numbers to some, but they are reality. Violence is a cycle that WE CAN CHANGE.
At The Fresh Approach we are proud to support this cause to have violence recognized and stopped. We are so proud to be associated with Royal LePage Credit Valley and all of the hard work our Broker Ron Rouse and his wife Kathie Rouse have put in to having this cause recognized. And of course a special thank you to all of the people who donate their time to the shelter to help support violence against women.
If you would like to donate to this cause or volunteer your time please contact us.
A couple of examples of ways that people donate their time:
- Teaching a class to the kids or the mothers (zumba, yoga, sports class)
- Teaching useful day to day skills
- Have an exceptional talent that can be shared
