Friends For Life Fundraiser
On Thursday November 15th we will be partaking in The Friends For Life Fundraiser. This fundraiser will be held in honor of Decio D’Oliveira. Part of the proceeds from this event will be donated to Prostate Cancer Research.
Decio D’Oliveira, husband of Allana Thompson and father of Tara, Christy and Brooke-Lynn D'Oliveira, is fighting the battle of prostate cancer. Decio has always been actively involved with the community and his family. For those of you who have read our blogs Decio has always been an active member of our team. Decio has worked as a contractor/renovator helping our team's visions come to life. He is a fabulous man with a love for music, his family, and has always looked to help others. We are very saddened to see the effects that this disease has had on him, and we are committed to continue this fight with him. The statistic that Prostate Cancer affects 1 in 6 men is very broad, it does not include that it also affects the people around them. As outsiders it is important to become aware of this disease and to properly educate others about the effects of prostate cancer and how to help to prevent it.
The event will be hosted at the Roc’N Doc’s 105 Lakeshore Boulevard East, Mississauga from 7:00pm – 11:30pm. The event will feature a Silent Auction, Raffle and a Cash Bar. There will also be live music from the band Start The Car.
This event will be a fantastic opportunity for people to come together with a common cause in mind. We are so excited to be a part of this event and to raise awareness about Prostate Cancer and how it can affect people and their families. By better educating the people around us about the effects of this disease and how to properly be tested for it we can help to save a life and to lower the statistics of men being diagnosed with this disease.

Information about Prostate Cancer:
Prostate Cancer will affect approximately 240,000 new cases of diagnosis each year
Approximately 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed of prostate cancer in their life time. We feel very strongly about raising awareness about prostate cancer and the effects it has on a family and on a persons life. With better education and awareness of this disease many men could help to prevent it by being better educated about Prostate Cancer and how to detect it in the early stages.
Prostate cancer is a disease where some prostate cells have lost normal control of growth and division. They no longer function as healthy cells.
A cancerous prostate cell has the following features:
• Uncontrolled growth
• Abnormal structure
• The ability to move to other parts of the body (invasiveness).
It is important to note that not all clusters of cells growing in a mass are cancerous, and that a prostate with an irregular shape is not necessarily cancerous either. It is advisable to ask your doctor what it may be.
Who gets prostate cancer:
- Statistically the chance of getting prostate cancer increases with age
- More commonly found in African American men or men of Caribbean decent
- Men who eat a low fiber and high fat diet
- Family history- your risk increases if members of your family have been diagnosed
How to check:
- PSA test (prostate-specific antigen) – a simple blood test measuring the proteins produced in the prostate
- DRE exam
- CT Scan
- Transrectal Ultrasonography
Testing, and yearly physicals are important to detect and prevent early signs of Prostate Cancer. It is very important for men to stay informed of Prostate Cancer and different signs. Testing can help prevent and better assess this disease. Prostate Cancer is the leading Cancer among men.
A significant proportion of prostate cancers, if untreated, may have serious consequences.
For more information in regards to prostate cancer www.prostatecancer.ca is the Canadian Prostate Cancer website with information on how to detect the disease, treatment methods, and support group programs. There are many ways to become involved with the disease and to help raise awareness.
We hope that everyone will be able to make the event and look forward to seeing you there. If you have any questions about event and how you can get involved please contact us directly.
