Creating Dimension in an Open Concept Layout

September 24, 2013 - Updated: September 24, 2013

Creating Dimension in an Open Concept Layout

Over the past few years Open Concept layouts have become increasingly popular within today’s home. Having an Open Concept design through your main floor can create the illusion of more space. However the biggest complaint about Open Concept we hear as realtors is that the space can feel like one big room.

When having an Open Concept Layout in your home it is important to create and define room spaces. The separation can create a sense of Formality and remove the "one big room" feeling! Here are a couple of quick tips!

Quick Tips to Define Your Open Concept Space:

Use the walls:

Add dimension by differentiating the colour scheming through the different spaces. Consider painting certain areas of this space a darker shade to define a more formal look. The use of different colours in spaces tricks the mind into envisioning them as a separate space. Also adding a textured wallpaper as an accent wall can be a very tasteful touch to create a focal point.

Use of Furniture:

Use your furniture to your advantage! Set it up as though there were existing walls- using different complimentary colour palets through the space will help to define and differentiate the areas. Also simple tricks like placement of Floor Lamps as well as Rugs can create focal points on their own.

Use of Colour Scheme and Accessories:

Define the spaces by using different accessories and schemes in each room. Using different accessories in each room will help to create a different ambience and feel.

Use of Architecture:

Do you have a fireplace in your floor plan? When creating your Open Concept home use your fireplace as a focal point to separate the room! Dealing with a Load Bearing wall that you want to remove? Using columns can create separation while opening up the room entirely! Solving two problems at once!
